The Alternative Law Groups (ALG) commends the Supreme Court for issuing the New Rules of Procedure for Environmental Cases just before the Earth Day Celebration. The new rule will be effective on April 29, 2010.

“The new rules would greatly help in the immediate resolution of cases as the high court has provided new remedies for the protection of the environment and new rules that are expected to facilitate the resolution of these cases”, said Atty. Marlon Manuel, coordinator of ALG.

The Pulangi V Megadam Issue in Bukidnon

The Manobo tribes and the BangsaMoro communities from various towns in Cotabato and Bukidnon in Mindanao are facing increasing threats of either being drowned or displaced by the proposed Megadam project, the Pulangi V which they have staunchly opposed to this day. They protest that the Megadam Project is being imposed on them against their will, and without their free, prior and informed consent.

Government officials and the power firm behind the project say that the Pulangi V Dam is about development and progress in Mindanao.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY —Alcantara and Sons Consolidated Resources, Inc.’s (Alsons) bioethanol plant project in the hinterland barangays here is a big threat to this city’s food security program.

This as the city land use plan (CLUP) for Year 2000 of Cagayan de Oro stated that land devoted to crop cultivation is only 22 percent or 4,529 hectares of the city’s total land area.

Cagayan de Oro only has 20,646 hectares of agricultural land left, the CLUP 2000 said.

Reviving the ill-fated Laiban Dam in Rizal and Quezon Provinces in the Southern Tagalog Region is a tragedy waiting to happen and an outright violation to the collective rights of the Dumagat indigenous peoples.

Let us not forget the dreadful flooding due to the San Roque Dam (SRD) last year that submerged 10 towns in Pangasinan, and parts of Nueva Vizcaya and Tarlac, resulting to at least 700 deaths.

MANILA, Philippines—-An anti-mining network is urging the government to use geohazard maps to review mining tenements and abandoned mines to prevent mining disaster.

The Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM), an advocacy group and people’s movement composed of more than 80 organizations from mining-affected communities and civil society organizations nationwide, said the Department of Environment of Natural Resources (DENR) P60 million geohazard mapping study of the Philippines identified landslide and flood prone areas in the country.

Legarda, on the devastating effects of Typhoon Pepeng held in San Manuel, Pangasinan on November 25, 2009. 4000 signatures of opposition of the Biggest Hydro-Dam in Mindanao filed before DOE today

Manila, Philippines – The Menovu-Pulangiyen and Menovu-Dunnguanen tribes of Southern Bukidnon, particularly the Municipalities of Damulog, Kibawe, Dangcagan, Kitaotao, and Pres. Roxas of North Cotabato gathered 4000 signatures as a manifest of their strong opposition and objection of the proposed Pulangi V hydro-Electric Project.

The opposition was filed and officially received by the Department of Energy (DOE) Central office in Taguig City, Metro Manila today.

The proposed Pulangi V Hydro dam is the biggest in Mindanao which would generate at least 300 Megawatts.
